YouTube and Copyright
3 Things I learned
- YouTube cross examines videos for copyright violations with ones they have in their database.
- If copyrighted videos are uploaded to YouTube, the owners of the original are given the choice of taking it down or benefiting from the publicity.
- YouTube analyzes over 100 years worth of videos every day.
2 Things I agree with
- The ability for copyright owners to choose what stays or goes on YouTube
- The fact that YouTube is working to protect copyright.
My one question
If a copyright owner removes a video from YouTube, the user who uploaded it gets a strike on their account. Would it not be beneficial if the user could submit a request to upload copyright protected videos? That way it would prevent the user from suffering and it would be one less video for YouTube to have to analyze.

When I Become a Teacher
Using Photo Story 3 for Windows, I have created a brief video describing my future goals as a teacher. Check it out below!
I believe that digital story telling can be beneficial to students because it allows them to be creative. That sense of creativity can motivate students to work harder and have a better understanding of the material they are learning. After reading the article, "World of Digital Storytelling", I found a new appreciation for programs like Photo Story 3. The article had one line that really stood out to me. It said, "Through creating narratives, students develop the power of their own voices and become heroes of their own learning stories". I think it's so important for students to be able to express themselves, and also be able to expand their knowledge in the source material.
Here is an example of a student made photo story that talks about the water cycle. It shows that the student learned about the topic, but is different from what classroom activities usually involve.

Webquest
Webquests are fun
and effective learning tools that allow technology to be utilized in the
classroom. Here is a webquest that I helped create with
Denise Ambrose.
"The
Learning Power of Webquests" says that, "A real WebQuest is a scaffolded learning structure that uses
links to essential resources on the World Wide Web and an authentic task to
motivate students’ investigation of an open-ended question, development of
individual expertise, and participation in a group process that transforms
newly acquired information into a more sophisticated understanding.
After reading "The Learning
Power of Webquests", I realized that my webquest at least falls under
three of the six characteristics of a good webquest. Essential
internet resources is covered because we made use of video, pictures, and
an on line poster called a glog. All of which were found using the internet.
The story line behind our webquest motivates students to work hard on the task.
For this reason our webquest has the characteristic of authentic tasks that
motivate. Our webquest also involves individual expertise because it breaks a
pair of students into two roles to complete the task.

Webquest Evaluation Worksheet
| The webquest uses emotion to get their point across. There a many questions that require more research. | Asks some question which do not require higher thinking skills. | |
The World of Shakespeare
| It doesn't ask questions which can be easily answered. Students must really research the different aspects of Shakespeare's life in order to excel in this project. | From the standpoint of The Altitudinist, this webquest has very few weaknesses. I believe it would really help students learn about the life and culture surrounding Shakespeare. |
| Students are able to evaluate themselves on how their project turns out. This will hopefully let them learn from their mistakes. | All information is gathered from preexisting sources. Very little critical thinking. | |
| Students not only learn facts about their country, but also the many cultural aspects as well. The desire to win could drive some students to learn as much as they can. | The one major weakness I see is the possibility for plagiarizing work. The would defeat the purpose of the project. | |
Students should have a better understanding of waves if the project was fully carried out. | Process reminded me too much of a school textbook. I didn't even want to read it. |

Collaborative Learning
Storybird Cover Page
ISTE NETS-T Standard 3 for Model Digital Age Work and Learning:
b. collaborate with students, peers, parents, and community members
using digital tools and resources to support student success and innovation.
Storybird could help meet this standard by allowing students work with teachers or
other students to create an on line story book. One person starts the story, and then it
is continued by another individual. This collaboration allows for even
a group of students to work together through technology to create a story.
Engaging
students in collaborative learning with technology is essential for preparing
them to work in the 21st century because our society is constantly evolving through
technology. The article, Technology Enhanced Collaborative Learning, states "Employers rank
teamwork/collaboration as one of the three most important applied skills". Students need to
have social and technological skills in order to thrive. That same article also says, "
A major difference between learning in the workplace and in school is that learning in school has traditionally focused on individual work". This relates that schools do not properly prepare students for the group work that many professions require.
Tools such as Storybird, Edmodo, and Skype allow students to work together through technology. This helps prepare them for future work later in life. Schools should learn to take advantage of the many free tools offered through computers and the internet. It would be extremely beneficial for many students if technology was made a part of the curriculum.
Skype
Skype allows students to video conference when circumstances prevent personal meeting. Being able to gather people all over the world with simply an internet connection is an amazing feat of technology, and would be very helpful for students to know how to use.
Edmodo
Edmodo is a social media site for teachers and students. Today's society has jumpstarted the social media craze, and it just makes sense to make one for the educational world. Students are given the opportunity to work with other students and teachers from wherever in the world. That kind of connection is fundamental for social development.

CSO and Lesson Plan with Google Apps
Students will use Google Docs conduct and/or design investigations that incorporate the skills and attitudes and/or values of scientific inquiry (e.g., established research protocol, accurate record keeping, replication of results and peer review, objectivity, openness, skepticism, fairness, or creativity and logic).
We chose to use a earth science related lesson plan and CSO for the assignment. Since we're both in a science related major, this assignment was favorable. Here is a link to the lesson plan.

Game Design, Scratch and Learning
Scratch is a extremely simplified method of contracting games using "building block" style programming. It's easy to learn, and allows young students to learn from trial and error. In the 21st century, it is very important the students be given all the tools possible to learn and expand their technological capabilities. Scratch gives students the opportunity to solve problems through a desire to create. "The ability to program interactive input provides students direct experience with sensing, feedback, and other fundamental systems concepts."(21st century learning skills)
ISTE-NETS-T Standard 1a
Promote, support, and model creative and innovative thinking and inventiveness.
Scratch is very useful in supporting this ISTE-NETS-T Standard. Students are able to work on their own in oder to create a project, and then they can collaborate to further their understanding of the topic. The programming is designed to provoke new ideas from simply exploring all the options. If a students discovers that they can make a character walk using scratch, then it won't be long until that student tries to make the character jump. This kind of thinking builds up until even more complex ideas form.
After exploring the scratch homepage, I was able to find a really cool project dealing with the periodic table. Here is a link to it!
SC.O.C.1.5
draw conclusions from a
variety of data sources to analyze and interpret systems and models (e.g., use
graphs and equations to measure and apply variables such as rate and scale,
evaluate changes in trends and cycles, or predict the influence of external variances
such as potential sources of error, or interpret maps).
The above is a CSO for chemistry. I believe Scratch could be used to help students understand the content listed in the CSO. Scratch could easily be used as a data source to analyzed, and could be a fun way for students to express results from an experiment.
I played around with Scratch for a little while, but my project is kinda lame. Here is a link to my project though. It will give you some idea of the basics of Scratch, but don't stop at my attempt. Look around the website, and see all the awesome projects people have created.
